2011 Head Race Results
|
A special “thank you” to all the adults and parents who came out to support our rowers, brought food and helped with the de-rigging and loading of boats to go home.
2011 Head of the Schuylkill Regatta:
October 29 and 30th
No one expected snow before Halloween, but that’s what Mother Nature had in store for us this year. The wind, freezing temperatures and snow resulted in the cancellation of Saturday races beginning at noon and a delayed start the next day. By the time NRR youth arrived for their races on Sunday, it was still very cold, but the sun was out, the winds were relatively light, and the youth were ready to row!
“We came away with fast times for all and nice results for the girls’ quads and girls’ double,” says Coach Mark Malone. His summary follows:
Women HS 4X (17 under)
The NRR-A quad - Kelsey, Juli, Jeanine and Jacqui - placed 4th out of 15 quads in a time of 15:09. When they were getting ready to launch, we heard someone on the dock remark that “those girls are so small” - as in possibly too small to hold their own against bigger crews. Well, with no one over 5’5”, they may be small, but they have great technique; understand ratio; and had an awesome row.
NRR B quad - Sara, Paige, Blake and Emily - came in 8th out of 15 quads in a time of 16:10. With a last minute change to the boat line up due to an illness, Emily was brave enough to take the bow seat in a race she’d never rowed before - and rowed a great course. These girls have been improving all year, and we're expecting some very fast times from them in the spring.
Women HS 2X (17 under)
Still small, Juli and Jacqui placed 5th out of 12 doubles in a time of 16:48. After helping propel the A quad to its 4th place finish, these girls hot seated right into their double and proceeded to row a great second race of the day.
Men HS 4X (19 under)
NRR A quad - Brendan, Tad, Dughan and Salvador - placed 7th out of 10 quads in a blistering 14:11, which was the best NRR time of the day. The 19 and under is a very competitive race and the times for 4th through 7th were all very close.
Men HS 4X (17 under)
NRR B quad - Ryan, Joe, Aidan and Peter - finished 9th out of 11 quads in a time of 15:09. With a new, untested line-up, the boys rowed a great race, convincing us that they have a very bright future.
KING’S HEAD OF THE SCHUYLKILL
Sunday, October 9, 2011
NRR kicked off the fall racing season with its best ever overall team performance, bringing home medals in 8 events - 4 gold and 4 silver - plus 3 third places finishes at the 2011 King’s Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Bridgeport, PA.
With temperatures more like August than October and flat water from start to finish, both NRR youth and masters participated, rowing the 3-mile course in singles, doubles and quads. Many, including some of the medal winners, were racing for the first time
“While winning those medals was definitely gratifying,” notes Youth Head Coach Mark Malone, “We couldn’t be more pleased by the performance, sportsmanship and team-spirit shown by all of our rowers, youth and adults, old hands and newcomers.”
Following are a few highlights of the day. To see how everyone did, with lineups, times, standings and comments, link to this spreadsheet prepared by Coach Malone.

Men’s High School Quad, Silver Medal: Navesink A - Dughan Ahimovic, Tad Gaffey, Brenden Sullivan and Salvador Tecalero - came in second in a very fast field. A particularly noteworthy accomplishment because Tad, a 15-year-old first year rower had been added to the boat just 2 days earlier when another youth broke his ankle.
Father/Daughter Double, Gold Medal: Coach Mark Malone completed his matched set of gold medals in King’s Head parent/child events by winning the Father/Daughter Doubles Race with his youngest daughter, Kelsey. He has now rowed in and won a parent/child race with each of his 4 children. Mark also won a silver medal in the Masters Double event rowing with Marc Daeman of Pennsylvania Barge Club. They finished with the fastest raw time on the water, but dropped to 2nd place when times were adjusted for age handicaps.
Club Single and Father/Son Double; Gold: Sean F. Byrnes, took home two gold medals - one in his first ever single sculling event and another rowing with his 15-year-old son Aidan, a first year rower racing for the first time.
Other First-Timers
- Boys Navesink B - Ryan Andersen, Joe Finley, Sam Santos and Pete Conlin - took 6th place in the Men’s High School Quad event, coming in just 37 seconds behind the A Boat.
- Girl’s Navesink B - novices Emily Unsinn, Blake Portmann, and Julia Cooper with “veteran” Sara Erkal - placed fifth in the Women’s High School Quad event, just 7 seconds behind their teammates in Girl’s Navesink A.

More Youth:
In the Women's High School Quad, the girl’s Navesink A boat- Kelsey Malone, Juli Gregg, Jacqui Veress, and novice Jeanine Veress - took third place.
Juli and Jacqui had competed earlier that day in the Women’s High School Double event, coming in 5th in a 10-boat field, just 1 tenth of a second out of fourth place.
Mike Guadagno, fresh from his 6th place finish in the Christian Brothers Academy 4+ at the Navy Day Regatta on Saturday, came in sixth out of 12 in the Men’s High School Singles race.
Not to be outdone, NRR Masters brought home their fair share of medals.
- Senior Masters (55+) Mixed Quad, Gold: John Crilly, Linda Ensor, Trish Russoniello and Charlie Gross. All 4 were rowing in their second event of the day.
- Men’s Senior Master (45-54) Single, Silver: John Crilly
- Women’s Masters Quad, Silver: Lynn Clark, Linda Decelle, Linda Ensor and Sandy Talarico
Third Place: Trish Russoniello, Susan Toscano, Kay Vilardi, Atikah Ismail
Fourth Place: Doreen Jakubcak, Francesca Casano, Nancy Lavin and Jacqui Martin.
- Women’s Masters Double, Third place: Lynn Clark, Sandy Talarico, who practically jumped right out of the double and into their quad.
- Men’s Masters Double, 4th place: Charlie Gross and King Sorenson, true veterans .
NAVY DAY

John Crilly, known to many as an NRR youth coach and the owner of Navesink Indoor Rowing, finished sixth in a hard fought Men’s Masters Single race. Fellow youth coach Mark Malone put it best - “John is like a fine wine. He gets better with age!!”
