2010 Head Race Results

One of NRR's best Head Racing season's yet, 2010 brought continued success to our top rowers, outstanding performances from relative newcomers, and a dramatic increase in the number of NRR youth and adults involved in competitive rowing.  Brief recaps follow - most recent races first.

11/13/2010 PHILADELPHIA FROSTBITE REGATTA
Mark Malone and Craig Slater Jr come in second in the Open 2x race.

10/31/2010 HEAD OF THE SCHUYLKILL REGATTA

This year’s HOSR hosted some of the best high school and club junior rowers in the northeast. There were more competitors per race and stiffer competition than our comparatively young crew had encountered previously. But in the end, even with the added challenge of high winds and rough water, we all rowed very well and very fast. (Everybody was under 20 minutes).

Youth Results:
Craig Slater Boys 1X  -  11th out of 56. 16:28:33. Only 30 seconds off the winning time.
Girls 4 w/cox - 45th out of 54. 19:15
Boys 4X - Will's Quad 18th out of 28. 15:11.
Boys 4X - Joe Zona's Quad 24th out of 28. 17:13
Girls 4X - Meredith's Quad 25th out of 43. 17:05.
Girls 4X - Eleanor's Quad 27th out of 43. 17:29.
Girls 4X - Christy's Quad 30th out of 43. 17:33.
Girls 4X - Sara's Quad 40th out of 43. 19:26.

Boys 2X - Eric and Chris’ double 29th out of 33. 18:56. Not bad for just their second time rowing together in a double.

Sunday Masters:
Charlie and King - Master Men 2X came in 5th 19:08.
Linda and Chrys - Womens Master 2X came in 5th 21:31.
Linda and Chrys also rowed in an Eight for Avalon that placed 5th.

COSTUMED NRR ROWERS MAKE THE NEWS IN PHILLY
From Philly.com news site: "Joe Zona, a high school senior, rowed in the boys' quad race for the Navesink River Rowing Club of Red Bank, N.J. He and his fellow rowers embraced the Halloween competition by wearing Viking helmets during the race.

"That was my idea," Zona said. "We kind of knew we weren't going to be the best boat out there, so we decided . . . we're going to do something really silly."

10/24/2010 HEAD OF THE CHARLES
“Three” proved to be the charm for Mark Malone and Oklahoman John Sanders, who had entered the Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR) lottery three times before finally getting a spot in the doubles race this year.  The two men, who met while competing against each other in lightweight singles at the 2006 Masters National Championships, were given the 24th starting slot at the HOCR. They passed 9 boats, were passed by none, and placed 8th out of 40 in their first ever head race together.

“Next year we’ll start in the 8th slot or better and not have boats slowing us up,” Mark reports, “Our ultimate goal will be to medal (top 4).”

On the 2nd day of the 2-day regatta, Mark and John, along with two boat-mates, raced in the very competitive Directors Quad Challenge and finished 6th out of 29. Last year they were 8th and the year before 10th....so they're moving on up. The Directors Challenge is a fund raising event with a $1000 entry fee that goes to the Charles River Foundation. Mark’s quad has a corporate sponsor for this race - G4S, and they race in G4S uni's and caps.

Other participants from NRR were Craig Slater Senior and Junior who raced in Directors Challenge Parent and Child 2X and did exceptionally well.  It was the first time they had rowed the Charles, but definitely, not the last.
